Indonesia Connect Roadshow scores goals in Surabaya
The Indonesia Connect Roadshow has landed in Surabaya and the team are kicking goals – quite literally!
To celebrate 15 years of sports cooperation, the delegation visited DBL Academy Pakuwon, which aims to develop and support future leaders.
With the help of four-time Olympian and Wildcats basketball legend Andrew Vlahov, the academy connects with youth across almost all provinces in Indonesia and regularly sends players to compete and learn in Australia.
Also present at the event was Robbie Gaspar, former Indonesian national league soccer player and president of the Indonesia Institute.
Primary Industries:
From sports to seaweed - Western Australian Minister for Agriculture and Food Jackie Jarvis led the delegation on a site visit to Mina Agar Makmur, a cooperative of seaweed farmers and other workers in the informal fisheries sector. Present at the visit were ULUU representatives Michael Kingsbury and Julia Reisser.
Founded in 2021, ULUU seeks to produce ocean-derived biomaterials (plastics) from farmed seaweed, helping to mitigate climate change and tackle plastic pollution. The two companies also held discussions on the potential use of ULUU’s co-product in aqua animal feeds and the potential benefits this held for WA’s aquaculture industry as well as the role of seaweed production in supporting the decarbonisation of the economy ahead of a Joint Venture Agreement signing later that day.
International Education/Creative Industries and Digital Economy:
Following the morning’s sports diplomacy event, delegates accompanied Western Australian Premier Cook and Western Australian Minister for Culture and the Arts, and International Education David Templeman on a visit to the Singhasari Special Economic Zone. The SEZ is East Java’s hub for tourism and digital technology development and plays an important role in WA and East Java’s film production partnership.
While at Singhasari, the delegation witnessed Memorandums of Understanding being signed with Western Australian education and training providers, which will provide upskilling or training development.
Energy Transition:
Delegates met with PLN Nusantara Power, a subsidiary of state-owned utility company Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), who presented on its integration of renewables into its power generation activities as well as the company’s support of developing sustainable energy in Indonesia.
