WA develops strategic partnership with Tamil Nadu

Western Australia has strengthened its relationship with the state of Tamil Nadu in India by signing a Letter of Intent on 20 March 2023 to foster economic cooperation and friendship.

Rebecca Brown, the Director General of the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation signed the agreement on behalf of the Government of Western Australia, while the Managing Director of Guidance Tamil Nadu, Thiru V. Vishnu IAS, signed on behalf of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

The agreement was facilitated by the Invest and Trade Western Australia Chennai Office, led by the Investment and Trade Commissioner for WA in India-Gulf, Nashid Chowdhury.

Under the partnership, the two states will work on economic cooperation, education, energy, mining and METS, space and innovation, defence, agriculture, health and medical life sciences.

The Deputy Premier Roger Cook inaugurated the Chennai office in July 2022, marking the opening of Western Australia’s second office in India.

Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, provides a vital link for southern India and it is a region that shares strong people to people ties with Western Australia.

Since the Deputy Premier’s mission in July 2022, WA and Tamil Nadu have established strong industry and business connections across new energy, space and aquaculture.

This includes contracts signed between companies including Ultra Power and Hild Energy; Space Angels and Skyroot Aerospace; and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Western Australia and the Seafood Exporters Association of India.

WA and Tamil Nadu have also established education links, with Curtin University and Edith Cowan University partnering with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras.
