New Invest and Trade office in Ho Chi Minh City
A new Invest and Trade Western Australia international office is now open in Ho Chi Minh City, in recognition of the increasing trade and tourism opportunities between Vietnam and Western Australia (WA).
Deputy Premier Roger Cook officially opened the office while in Vietnam as part of a four-day investment, trade and tourism mission.
"The new Ho Chi Minh City office provides future opportunities for Western Australian companies to do business in Vietnam and attract investment into the State,” said Deputy Premier Cook.
"With 2023 marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Australia and Vietnam, it is the perfect time for WA to open a new office in Vietnam.”
The mission also marks the first official visit by a WA Government Minister to Vietnam since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
While in Ho Chi Minh City, Deputy Premier Cook met with representatives from Vietjet, Vietnam Airlines and Bamboo to continue discussions around securing direct flights to Western Australia.
The Minister also met with the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, the Ho Chi Minh City branch of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and local proponents to discuss hydrogen opportunities between the two regions.
The delegation then travelled from Ho Chi Minh City to Ba Ria-Vung Tau, where the Deputy Premier met with the Ba Ria-Vung Tau People’s Committee to recognise and celebrate the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which was signed virtually in September 2020.
The MoU was undertaken to foster mutual economic development between Western Australia and Ba Ria-Vung Tau, a key economic zone in Vietnam, with a particular focus on tourism, education and vocational training, and culture and the arts.
The mission to Vietnam coincided with the launch of the Western Australian Premier’s University Scholarship and Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) Bursary.
Both the scholarship and bursary programs provide funding support to international students looking to complete their studies in Western Australia, with Vietnam identified as one of 13 priority markets.
Vietnam is Western Australia's 13th largest trading partner, with $2.6 billion of goods traded in 2021-22.
In 2021-22, WA exported $2.2 billion of goods to Vietnam, which was almost double the annual average of $1.2 billion over the past decade, reflecting increasing economic opportunities between the two regions.
