Western Australian businesses, researchers and government representatives joined the Hon Stephen Dawson MLC, Minister for Regional Development; Ports; Science and Innovation; Medical Research; and the Kimberley, on an investment and trade mission to Norway as part of ONS 2026. 

The delegation, through the State of Energy stand, showcased the State’s capabilities in energy transition, carbon capture and storage, offshore decommissioning and subsea innovation as part of the world’s leading energy conference. 

The theme for ONS 2026 was “Courage”. The focus was on bold leadership and innovation required to navigate today's complex energy challenges. This year’s event attracted 69,374 participants from 92 nations.

From 24 to 27 August, our delegation met with counterparts from across the energy industry, politics, academia and wider society to exchange knowledge, explore new technology and discuss opportunities for Western Australia.

At our State of Energy stand, interested parties were able to learn more about the various energy projects across our State and at the NORWEP International Markets Insights Session, Minister Dawson highlighted Western Australia's unique position as a global energy powerhouse and a trusted partner in the energy transition.

The session also promoted Western Australia's approach to economic diversification and energy transition, including developments across decommissioning, renewable energy, carbon capture, utilisation and storage, and subsea innovation. Together, the speakers highlighted Western Australia's extensive capabilities across oil and gas, critical minerals, advanced manufacturing, renewable energy and emerging low-carbon industries, while demonstrating how innovation, research and strategic policy settings are supporting the State's long-term economic growth.

A key milestone of the conference was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between GCE Ocean Technology and Subsea Innovation Cluster Australia (SICA) in the presence of Minister Dawson. This MOU is an excellent example of how international collaboration can deliver tangible opportunities for Western Australian companies and researchers

Delegates further explored the ONS Technology Hall, where emerging technologies including artificial intelligence-enabled operations, subsea robotics, remote operations, carbon capture and storage technologies and advanced monitoring systems were showcased. These innovations have strong potential applications across Western Australia's energy, resources and industrial sectors.

Ahead of the conference, representatives visited Northern Lights in Øygarden, Norway, the world's first cross-border commercial carbon transport and storage service. This facility was of interest because it delivered its first successful CO₂ injection and storage operation in 2025 and provided delegates with valuable insights into large-scale carbon management infrastructure.
